Hospice needs you to get running or swimming in 2012 for them. PR and Marketing Manager for Hospice Mary Doyle explains:

“With 2012 just starting now is the time of year New Year resolutions are made – Hospice is looking for a couple of runners for the London Marathon in 2012 in April.” She added: “we have a couple of spare places, but if you can’t quite manage that how about a short 10k for our children’s hospice, Rebecca House on 20th May 2012 – during children’s hospice week. The BUPA Great Manchester Run is for runners of all abilities and is live on BBC TV!

We have also been allocated 10 places for the Great Manchester Swim on 1st July. This is a one mile swim in the docks of Salford Quays.

Hospice is keen to get lots of people involved in raising £3.5 million a year and believes by getting fit for Hospice everyone can play their part. For further details please contact Hospice’s fundraising team on 647431 or email fundraising@hospice.org.im

A fabulous masquerade ball was held at Mount Murray raising over £20,000 for Hospice Isle of Man. The event, supported by Barclays Wealth. was attended by nearly 200 people. The scene was set by a stunning ice sculpture of a mask expertly made by Ice Mann’s Darren Jackson and Stephanie Quayle. The table plan had also been set in ice!

Expertly compered by Dot Tilbury MBE and Geoff Corkish MBE the evening also provided the opportunity for the first ever Flash Mob on the island! Masquerade was choreographered by Alison Lodge and Sonya Quayle. Over 24 of the guests had taken part in the secret rehearsals over the previous few weeks and definitely stunned all the other guests with their ‘surprise’ party piece.

There was a wide selection of auction and raffle prizes including a bespoke art piece of a car bonnet. The artist Shelby Sandyford-Skyes explained there are only 10 of them on sale on the Island.

PR and Marketing Manager for Hospice, Mary Doyle thanked Shelby for her unusual donation particularly as Shelby had won the Archibold Knox Award for Manx Inspired art 2011. Other donors for the auction included Mike Osborne, Microgaming, SMP Partners, 188 Foundation Steve Quirke and Nigel Sperring at the Mailbox, John Morphet, Isle of Man Newspapers, Charles Alexander, Stellar Group, Michele Bowen, Manx2.com, Star Services, Robinsons, Elaine’s Florist, Utopia, Jay Edwards, the Sefton Group, My Chocolate Explosion, Muffin Top Cupcakes, Paddy’s Market, Mount Murray Hotel & Country Club, Rendezvous Speedy Park and The Tanning and Nail Studio.

Mary added: “We are absolutely thrilled that not only was it a fabulous night but to raise over £20,000 in such a tough financial climate was the icing on the cake. “A huge thanks to everyone involved in making this event such a success.”

Hospice Isle of Man would like to raise £5,000 to buy a bariatric bed for their in-patient unit.

This particular type of bed allows the patient to have “up close” time with their family members – it is a larger than the usual single bed.

In order to raise funds for this bed Hospice has teamed up with a brand new initiative on the Island – Peel2Save. This innovative scheme is being run by local businessman, Gary Peirce.

The Peel2Save fundraising card is a no-risk way of raising funds with the charity receiving £5 from each card they sell. Hospice hopes to sell 1,000 of these cards in order to raise £5,000 for this bed.

The vouchers can be bought for just £10 and are worth over £300 with 64 individual peel-off coupons covering a wide range of tastes and interests. The expectation is that purchasers of a Peel2Save card will be able to enjoy savings of at least the price they pay for the card whilst at the same time raising £5 for Hospice.

PR and Marketing Manager for Hospice, Mary Doyle said: “We were delighted when Gary approached us, Hospice needed to find a way of raising money for a bariatric bed and this was a unique and interesting way of doing it”. “I particularly like one or two of the vouchers and am looking forward to using them”.

Gary added: “Hospice is a well loved charity and with cancer touching so many lives these days I am delighted to be working with them to help raise much needed and valued funds.”

The Peel2Save cards are available from Hospice’s fundraising team on 647434, Hospice’s Share the Care warehouse at Unit 14, Springham Valley, Braddan (behind B&Q) and from several of the local businesses featured on the Peel2Save card. Staff and volunteers at Hospice will also be selling cards to family and friends

Hospice Isle of Man is joining forces with hospices across the UK to launch the first ever Hospice Care Week. From 8 to 14 October 2011, Hospice Isle of Man hopes to raise awareness of hospice care and address the misconceptions that people may have about what hospice care is.

As part of this week we are inviting people to say in one word, what does ‘hospice care’ mean to them? Email your thoughts to admin@hospice.org.im or post onto Hospice’s Facebook page. Some of the suggestions have included ‘choice’, ‘laughter’, ‘celebrations’, ‘living’, ‘hope’, ‘dignity’, ‘me time’ What does your Hospice mean to you?

Hospice is also asking for people to get involved in raising funds during this important week – how about a Come Dine with Me themed event. Get your friends or colleagues together over lunch or dinner – everyone who takes part is asked to bring a dish for the other guests to enjoy and make a donation to Hospice to try this out!

Get involved and make a difference. Contact fundraising@hospice.org.im to register your events and we will come along a take a photograph for our forthcoming newsletter. Fundraising can be contacted on 647431.
