Rebecca House

Rebecca House is a children’s wing in the Hospice, Isle of Man. It is a purpose-built facility that opened in November 2007 and it provides respite, palliative and end of life care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions from birth to 18 years. Rebecca House offers a safe haven and a home from home environment in which physical, emotional, recreational and spiritual care is offered and implemented in a way appropriate to the child and their family. Rebecca House offers the highest possible standards of care and support
to each child and their families to enable them to cope with their illness and lead as full and normal life as possible.
The aim of the Rebecca House team is to provide holistic care to families, encompassing play, massage and relaxation, pet therapy, music therapy and use of the multi-sensory room. Care is offered in a flexible and accommodating manner and in doing so, Rebecca House provides opportunities for families to have a rest and enjoy quality time with other family members and siblings.

The team at Rebecca House is currently made up of five Registered Nurses and six Nursery Nurses.

Rebecca House has a warm and friendly atmosphere where children are able to relax and
have fun. The staff enjoys the reward of being able to make a difference to the children’s lives and seeing a child regain their confidence and in some cases their health.
Rebecca House currently provides care seven days a week between the hours of 8am and 8pm and the introduction of overnight weekend care has begun. Its aim is to provide care seven days a week, 24 hours a day in the future.
Rebecca House has a wide variety of specialist in-patient facilities including four fully furnished en-suite bedrooms, a separate adapted bathroom and wet room, a children’s multi-function room, a fully-fitted kitchen and the Dream Room offering a full multi-sensory experience.

Outside there is also a children’s play area complete with wheelchair swing and a remembrance garden.

A complementary therapy service is available for parents/carers. In the near future a sibling group will be started, to provide some much needed fun and support. A bereavement suite is available to all families on the island, whether previously known to Rebecca House or not, along with a pre and post bereavement service within hospice for all members of the family.
At Rebecca House, every attempt is made to tailor-make the day around the children ensuring they are offered a wide variety of activities.
Upon arrival, staff discuss with parents current matters regarding their child’s care. The child is then taken into the multi-function room where they can choose their activities for the day. Such activities include arts and crafts, baking, playing on the computer and water play. The staff ratio is usually one to one due to the complexities of the children’s conditions.
Whilst play and having fun are major parts of a child’s day at Rebecca House, it is also important that they enjoy quiet time when they can relax and unwind. At the end of the day spent in Rebecca House, the children are happy to go home but are always eager to return.
The Rebecca House team regularly gain feedback from the children and families who visit and it is good to hear how important and valuable the service is to them.

“Rebecca House feels more like a welcome refuge than a respite.”

“All our children love visiting Rebecca House because it’s such a friendly place.”

“Every time we arrive we are welcomed with a smile.”

“We would be lost without the help.”
