What is Project ECHO®?

Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a telementoring model developed by the School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM). The model is focussed on increasing capacity within primary care and therefore addressing the increasing demand for secondary care services by de-monopolising specialist knowledge and improving relationships across primary, secondary and tertiary care.Project Echo body banner

Using video-conferencing technology, participants share evidence-based, best practice guidance, and case-based learning with the aim of developing clinicians’ confidence and capacity in safely and effectively treating common, chronic and complex diseases.

Use of the method is now growing on a worldwide basis across many areas of healthcare to improve patients’ access to specialist supported care and to improve patient outcomes. Northern Ireland, for example, now has 35 ECHO networks across a wide range of medical specialities supported by Heath and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSCNI).

How we are using Project ECHO

We are using the video-conferencing technology to share, learn and educate, meaning we are able to exchange knowledge more efficiently.

Currently in its primary phase, we have set up the Isle of Man End of Life Care ECHO knowledge network, which features Hospice as the hub and the seven island-based nursing homes as the spokes.

Through specialist speaker presentations and case-based learning, the network has the following main aims:

  • Increasing Nursing Home staff’s confidence and skill in regard to end of life care
  • Reducing the number of admissions in the acute sector at the end of life
  • Increasing the opportunity for a person’s preferred place of death to be their actual place of death
  • Improving the experience of patients and carers at the end of life
  • Increasing the extent of Hospice influenced care at the end of life

Why you should join

  • Improve your confidence
  • Gain up-to-date knowledge
  • Participate in clinical discussions
