Volunteer

Have you thought about volunteering?

Here at Hospice, our number one aim is to make life better for those with life-limiting illnesses and to assist their families and carers whenever they need us – and this simply wouldn’t be possible without the commitment and generosity of our volunteers.

There are lots of ways to lend a hand and you can really make the roles your own! We’d love to know if you have any particular skills you’d like to share so that we can find a role to suit you.

As little as two hours a week can make a huge difference so why not get in touch.

What can you do to help?

At our Hospice Shops – Hospice has 7 charity shops and a warehouse located across the Island. Our volunteer shop roles include a mix of responsibilities including processing till sales and returns, visual merchandising and stock preparation including sorting, steaming and pricing.

At Hospice reception – A chance to work in a friendly team, meet and greet patients and visitors, whilst also answering telephone calls and escorting visitors to the patients’ rooms. There will be also the chance to help out in the coffee shop.

At our events – It costs £4 million a year to run Hospice. Events and fundraisers go a long way to helping us raise these vital funds and we simply couldn’t host these without the support of volunteers. Activities range from car park attending, handing out refreshments to marshalling events and managing stalls.

Complementary Therapy Volunteers – Here at Hospice we offer a number of complementary therapies to patients and their carers. These therapies help relieve stress, aid relaxation and promote a sense of well-being amongst patients – if you are a trained masseuse and have a few hours spare to make an invaluable contribution to our patients day to day lives then get in touch.
Volunteer Drivers –If you have a few hours to spare during the week, love being behind the wheel and want to make a difference, then we need your help! Many of our patients struggle to get to and from Hospice – our volunteer drivers help bring patients to the Hospice for clinical appointments or day unit activities.

Volunteer Gardeners – Do you have green fingers, want to get out more and have a few hours each week to spare? Why not come and help out at the Hospice’s beautiful gardens. Job responsibilities include a variety of gardening tasks under the supervision of the Head Gardener.

Other roles – Hospice offers a choice of other volunteer opportunities including flower arranging, serving teas and coffees to patients, supporting nursing staff with washing & feeding and assisting patients with shopping and errands.

Reasons to volunteer

Volunteers have their own motivations for being a part of the Hospice team, but here are just some of the reasons why you should consider volunteering:

  • A chance to work in a friendly team, to make new friends and meet a diverse group of people.
  • A chance to do something fun, but also fulfilling both on a personal and job satisfaction level
  • The opportunity to make an invaluable contribution to Hospice’s patient lives and their families
  • The time to develop your confidence and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to gain valuable work experience to add onto your CV and to learn new skills
  • The chance to gain valuable retail experience.
