Hospice Sports Challenge – Sunday 3rd August 2025

Get ready to test your strength, stamina, and team spirit at the Hospice Sports Challenge—a fun-filled afternoon of friendly competition on the golden sands of Peel Beach! Taking place during the vibrant Peel Carnival, this action-packed event invites Mixed teams of six, (minimum of two female members), to take on two exhilarating challenges: the Partner Carrying Race and an epic Team Tug of War.

Inspired by the famous World Wife Carrying Championships, the Partner Carrying Race will see participants navigate a 250-meter obstacle-filled course in a quirky, laughter-filled display of teamwork. For an idea of what this event is all about, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7IM9f16QZ4. 

Then, it’s down to raw power and tactics in the 6-vs-6 knockout-style Tug of War, where only one team will emerge victorious. Whether you're in it to win it or just fancy some beachside fun, it’s the perfect day out for friends, families, and colleagues alike.

Partner Carrying Rules

• The 6-person teams will split into 3 pairs for the Partner carrying event
• Males or females carry a partner, (who must be alive, human, and at least 18 years old).
• There is a weigh-in prior to the start: all partners must weigh at least 50kg. Anyone under-weight will be obliged to wear a rucksack filled with ballast to bring them to the required weight.
• Obstacles and water hazards will be included.
• You can use any one of the many recognised holds: bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder-ride, fireman's carry (across the shoulders), the well-recognised and very fast Estonian Hold (wife hangs upside-down on man's back, legs crossed in front of the man's face) or the not-so-fast but unique Dorking Hold (the reverse Estonian).
• All those carried must wear a helmet.
• Please note that race entry fees are not refundable (all profits go to charity) but teams are able to pass on their place to another team.
