For National Volunteers Week, please be introduced to John Scott.
John has kindly shared his volunteering story with us - thank you John for sharing and for your dedication to Hospice, we're truly grateful!
"After a lifetime spent working in customer services, John retired around 10 years ago, partly to care for his beloved wife, whose health was declining at the time. Originally from the UK, John moved to the Island when he was just 20, looking for a change of pace. That change became permanent; he met his wife here, built a life, and raised a son, who now lives back in the UK. Recently, John became a proud grandfather to a beautiful baby girl, just six weeks old.
Throughout his life, John’s passion for motorcycles kept him closely tied to the TT and MGP. As part of the “Orange Army,” he volunteered as a marshal for over 20 years, building lifelong friendships and cherishing every moment spent near the bikes he loves.
Today, John also gives his time and energy to Hospice, a cause close to his heart. His journey into volunteering began during a casual chat over a drink with a friend who suggested he consider helping out at Hospice. The idea resonated with John. His wife had received care through the Hospice at Home service, and the opportunity to give something back felt right.
Now, John volunteers as a driver and helps out at the In-Patient Unit (IPU) and Day Unit receptions. He finds deep fulfilment in meeting people from all walks of life and being part of their stories, even in small ways. For John, it’s not just about giving back, it’s about connection, community, and continuing to live a meaningful life through service."
