This week is National Volunteers Week, so it gives us the opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to each and every person who gives their time to help us in any way they can.
We'd love to share with you a story from one of our wonderful volunteers; Kath who supports us in our Day Unit. Thank you Kath for taking the time to share your story with us.
"Hi, I’m Kath a happy 73-year-old, retired now but still with plenty of energy and time to give. I’ve been happily married to my lovely husband for 52 years, and I’m a proud mum of two incredible children and a nana to three adult grandchildren. Throughout my life, I’ve qualified as a State Enrolled Nurse, worked in a video rental shop, ice cream shop before becoming an administrator within a Fund Management Company and also Relate a local charity, to name a few but the roles I’ve loved most have involved supporting and helping people both medically and emotionally. I’ve also spent some time as a home help, helping older adults stay safely in their own homes, something I found incredibly rewarding. When my son-in-law faced a life-limiting illness, it reignited my passion for care and service. I knew I wanted to give back in a meaningful way. Volunteering at the hospice felt like the perfect fit, bringing together my nursing background and compassion. Today, I volunteer in the Hospice Day Care Unit which is the perfect fit for me. Sandra and her team are amazing and they create an atmosphere that is filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine friendship. While there are certainly challenges, the joy of seeing patients leave with a smile after spending another day with the unit is deeply fulfilling, not just for them, but for us as volunteers too. Being surrounded by such inspiring patients and colleagues is a true gift. I genuinely believe you’re never too old to follow your passion, and I hope my journey shows just how powerful and rewarding it can be to give your time to others."
