Raising Awareness, Reducing Stigma: IOM Unites for Dementia Awareness Week 2025

The Forget Me Not Isle of Man Admiral Nurses, in partnership with Manx Care, Manx Decaf, and the Alzheimer’s Society, are marking Dementia Awareness Week 2025 from Sunday 21st  September, with a programme of events aimed at raising awareness and offering support to those affected by dementia.

The highlight of the week will be an Information Day on Friday 26 September, taking place at the Isle of Man Sea Terminal from 10am to 4pm. The event is open to all members of the public. It will provide an opportunity to speak directly with specialist Admiral Nurses and partner organisations, access guidance and information, and learn more about the support available for people living with dementia and their families.

Dementia can be one of the most complex and challenging health conditions, not only for those diagnosed but also for the people who care for them. The Forget Me Not Admiral Nurses emphasise the importance of recognising each individual’s unique experience, encapsulated in their message: “If you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia.”

Jeanette Hogg, Lead Forget Me Not Admiral Nurse, said, “Dementia Awareness Week is about breaking down stigma and showing people they are not alone. By placing the person, rather than the diagnosis, at the centre of care, our team can provide tailored advice, emotional support, and practical strategies to help families navigate the dementia journey.”

Dementia Friends information sessions, led by the Alzheimer’s Society will be running across the week at various  locations across the Island. These sessions are designed to increase understanding of dementia and to empower individuals, businesses, and community groups to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected. In addition, a lively and welcoming Dementia Disco will take place on Tuesday, 30th September at Pulrose Golf Club. This event promises an afternoon of music, dancing, and connection, offering a joyful space for people with dementia, their carers, and supporters to come together in celebration.
