The Isle of Man’s running calendar is set to expand in 2026 with the launch of an exciting new 50-mile Ultra Running event, proudly sponsored by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and held in support of Hospice Isle of Man.

This challenging new endurance event will see solo runners take on a stunning 50-mile off-road route, showcasing some of the Island’s most breathtaking landscapes. The course will include sections of the Heritage Trail and the Raad ny Foillan coastal footpath, offering participants an unforgettable mix of inland trails, rugged coastline, and sweeping sea views.

The 50-mile Ultra will run alongside the established Race the Sun, the iconic 10-leg relay event where teams of up to 10 runners, strive to complete a full 90-mile lap of the Island between sunrise and sunset. The addition of the Ultra distance provides an exciting new challenge for individual athletes looking to test their endurance while supporting a vital local cause.

Both events will take place on the new date of Saturday 27th June 2026, with the finish line for both events on North Quay in Douglas, marking a fresh chapter for Race the Sun and this brand-new Ultra challenge. With support from Douglas City Council and Heron & Brearley Ltd, the Quay will be closed to vehicles, allowing for the creation of a festival atmosphere with food, drink and music to greet the finishers and their supporters.

Isle of Man Ultramann 2026

We’re thrilled to introduce this new event to the Island’s sporting community,” said Fiona Hatton, the new CEO of Hospice Isle of Man. “It offers runners the opportunity to push their limits, experience the beauty of our island, and raise funds for a cause that touches so many lives.

The 50-mile, UltraMann race will commence with a mass start at dawn, 04:47, at a measured point on the Heritage Trail, between Union Mills and the bottom of the Glen Lough Campsite track.

From there, the route follows the Heritage Trail westwards to Peel and then climbs up the track from South Quay to join the Raad ny Foillan. The remainder of the course then follows the Raad southwards, (anti-clockwise), to the Finish Line on North Quay, Douglas.

There will be five Feed Stations on the route: Peel, The Sloc, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Port Grenaugh, coinciding with the Changeover points for the Race the Sun relay legs. The Race the Sun event will be taking place at the same time as the UltraMann, but following the Raad in the opposite direction and completing the whole 95-mile coastal path.

Transport will be available for those who require it from North Quay to Union Mills prior to the Start.

All participants will be issued with a Geo Track unit that must be carried during the event. Aside from this fulfilling timing and safety requirements, the unit will also provide live progress online, so that friends and supporters of the runners may track their progress throughout the run.

The Provisional route is illustrated below and is now ‘Public’ on Ridewithgps at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54385998. Whilst it is unlikely there will be any significant changes this, the confirmed final route will be issued as a .gps file no later than two weeks prior to the race date.
